Redback Spider

The redback spider has been a well-known member of Australia’s most notorious species list for years. They are very common throughout Newcastle and surrounding areas. Redbacks are commonly found in dark, dry places, such as under roof eaves, floorboards, maitboxes, flowerpots or in garden sheds.

Most reported spider bites within Australia come from the redback, yet there have been no subsequent deaths for over 50 years, thanks to the introduction of an anti-venom. These spiders are generally non-aggressive and won’t bite unless their webs are disturbed, or they are picked up - they are happy being left alone.

Most serious bites come from the female redback spider, which is bigger than the male redbackspider - measuring around 1cm long. Having such small fangs makes most of their bites ineffective, but at times their bite can be successful, causing potential life-threatening conditions to humans. The main symptoms from a redback spider bite is consistant and servere pain, which can last up to a few days, depending on the individuals sensitivity to their venom.

Redback Spider
Mouse Spider

Mouse Spider

There are several species of mouse spider, and often confused with the funnel-web spider. The males are smaller and more elongate than the females. They also have short spinnerets. They are more commonly found in country areas, as they live in open bushland and shrubs, they tend to avoid heavily populated urban regions.

Some mouse spiders have a very toxic venom, potentially as dangerous as that of the Sydney Funnel-web Spider. However, few cases of serious envenomation have been reported. Unlike funnel-web spiders, the mouse spider is believed to use less venom and possibly even dry bite.

While mouse spider bites are rare, due to the potential toxicity to humans, first aid treatment should be provided if bitten. Fortunately, funnel-web spider antivenom has proven effective in cases of mouse spider bite.

Sydney Funnel Web Spider

Our Annual

There are several species of funnel-web spiders, however, the most common around Newcastle and the Hunter Valley region is the Sydney funnel-web. With highly toxic venom and large fangs, its bite is capable of causing serious illness or death in humans if left untreated. Their fangs are so powerful, they can puncture through soft-soled shoes, fingernails and toenails.  It is considered the deadliest spider in the world.

The Sydney funnel-web can be found in moist sheltered placess, including under logs and foliage. They can make their way into gardens and swimming pools, and while they are not often encountered, they turn aggressive very quickly if they feel any threat.

A Sydney funnel-web bite is regarded as a medical emergency requiring immediate hospital treatment and anti-venom. The venom from the bite can attack the human nervous system and alter organ function, eventually leading to death if not treated immediately.

Funnel Web
Orb Spider

Orb-Weaving Spider

Orb-weaving spiders are the most common group of builders of spiral wheel-shaped webs, often found in gardens around the Newcastle and surrounding regions. They have the ability to make suspended, sticky webs and some can be several meters wide. Webs are often built in the openings between trees and shrubs, where insects are likely to fly, which is how they catch their prey.

They often hide during the day - hanging from a thread under a leaf or stick, or even clothes hanging on your clothes line. They then become active at night, constructing their webs, often taking it down again at dawn.

Orb-weaving spiders are generally a non-aggressive group of spiders, unless of course you come in contact with their web - it's then you may get a nasty bite. However, their bite is of low risk to humans and will usually only cause some mild pain and swelling. Always be sure to monitor your symptoms though, as spider bites can affect everyone differently.

Black House Spider

Found in homes and buisnesses around Newcastle and surrounding areas, Black house spiders are well-adapted to live alongside humans, as our population continue to spread into their natural habitats. Black house spiders are commonly found in corners of the home, windows and doorways, as they prefer to live in well-lit places. These spiders are usually not aggressive.

If you have Black house spiders in your home or buisness, you will likely notice less insects roaming around. This is because Black house spiders control the insect population by building their sticky, silky webs to catch their prey.

Despite being venomous, Black house spiders are not considered a threat to humans as they are often shy and timid, hiding away from any potential threats. However, they can deliver a painful bite if they feel threatened. While usually low risk to humans, if the pain persists or you are worried about your symptoms, it is best to seek medical attention.

Black House Spider
Huntsman

Huntsman Spider

Huntsman spiders are found all over Australia, so you’ve got a good chance of spotting one (or more) of these spiders in your home, especially during warm, humid weather.

Huntsman spiders are quite hairy and can grow as wide as 15cm. Their front legs are larger than the back ones and bend forwards, allowing them to crawl in all directions very quickly. If you have seen one move, you will know how scary they can be! However, they are quite harmless to humans. In fact, having them around your home can be very useful in controlling mosquito and cockroach numbers.

Occasionally people have reported being bitten by a huntsman, and the outcome is usually no more than mild pain and swelling at the bite site, which is easily treated with a cold pack. There is however, one species of huntsman – the badge huntsman, which is found throughout Australia – that has a bite that’s known to produce more unpleasant symptoms, including severe localised pain and swelling at the bite site, accompanied by sweating, nausea and vomiting. While no one has died from a huntsman bite, it's best to seek medical advise if you are concerned.

Our Annual

White Tailed Spider

White-tailed Spiders can be found inside the home, yet often live in the gardens, beneath rocks and bark, in leaf litter or in folds of clothes, sheets, towels and shoes. Most active at night, they wander freely hunting other spiders - their favoured prey is the black house spider. Unlike other spiders, they do not build webs to capture their prey.

White-tailed Spiders are passive and only bite when they feel threatened, such as being handled or trapped. Their bites may cause a small red or discoloured bump, similar to an insect bite, that burns or itches. On rare occasions, bites can cause nausea, vomiting, headaches. If this happens, it is advised to seek medical attention.

White Tailed Spide
Trap Door

Trapdoor Spider

Most trapdoor spiders, but not all, are misleadingly named, as not all species make a door for their burrows. For those species that do, these highly camouflaged entrances are almost undetectable, unless the door is open. Unlike other spiders who use webs to catch their prey, trapdoor spiders detect vibrations around their burrow, and when the prey comes close enough, they jump out and capture it.

A Trapdoor spider can be around 2.5 centimetres long on average. Often females being distinctively larger than males. These spiders tend to be quite timid, although the male may rear up if threatened. They have powerful jaws and sharp fangs, that stab downwards into its prey.

While scary to look out, trapdoor spiders usually only cause minor symptoms for humans, generally inflicting only localised pain, but sometimes nausea, lethargy and malaise. Trapdoor spiders are often mistaken for funnel-web spiders, especially since the early effects of their bites are similar; these spiders should therefore be treated with caution. If you have been bitten by a burrow spider, it is best to seek medical treatment to be safe.

preventative measures

Prevention goes a long way and is always better than the cure itself. If you want to keep spiders away, you should:

Maintain a clean house

Limit lighting when not in use, as it attracts bugs, which attracts spiders

Seal gaps around your home

Keep gardens well maintained

Get rid of spider webs

Be wary of what you bring inside, i.e. shoes, toys etc. Spiders love to hide in small dark places
