Our Annual
most common mice and rat species
Norway Rat
The Norway rat (aka brown rat), is a common rodent species in Newcastle. Short, dense fur covers their bodies except for the nose, tail and ears, which are bald. Their natural colors range from grey to brown, often with lighter coloring on the underside. They are prolific breeders, quickly establishing large colonies within buildings, basements, and sewers.
Norway rats are nocturnal creatures, posing a significant threat to both residential and commercial properties in Newcastle. They are notorious for causing structural damage by gnawing on electrical wires, wooden structures, and pipes. They are carriers of various diseases and parasites.

Roof Rat
The most common rat in Australia is the roof rat. Roof rats can be black or brown with long tails, large ears and eyes, and pointed noses. They have smooth fur with hairless, scaly tails that are longer than their heads and bodies. Roof rats are smaller and sleeker than Norway rats. You can differentiate between the roof rat and the Norway rat by looking at the length of the tail. If the tail is longer than the head and body, then it’s a roof rat. And if it is shorter, then it’s a Norway rat.

Roof rats are food hoarders, stashing supplies of food such as seeds and nuts, however, they are omnivorous and will feed on almost anything available to them. These rats are prodigious breeders and can breed year-round. Within a year, one female may be responsible for up to 40 new rodents.
Being carriers of many diseases and parasites, roof rats can transmit diseases through physical contact, bites, by contamination or by fleas that are feeding on the rodent.
House Mouse
The House mouse is a small rodent common in homes around Newcastle. They have a compact body, measuring around 75mm long, excluding their tail. House mice have soft fur that can vary in colour, ranging from light brown to dark grey.

House mice sneak into your homes for the warmth and the food. Being adept climbers, they can squeeze through tiny openings and begin eating your food and causing issues around the property. They are not only a nuisance, but they can pose significant health risks, such as lice and other diseases that can be passed onto humans.

House mice are breeding machines; they can adapt quickly to changing conditions. In fact, a female house mouse can give birth to a half dozen babies every 25 days and can produce on average 35 new young per year. These young will start breeding at 6 weeks of age. So, if you have one house mouse, before you know it, you could have a full-blown infestation.

To effectively eliminate any of these rodents, it is important to hire a professional rodent control service, such as Alto Pro Pest Control. Our team of experts use trapping and baiting techniques, along with targeted exclusion methods, to seal off entry points and prevent re-infestation.
