species

The following are the most common cockroach species found in Newcastle and surrounding areas:

large cockroaches

American Cockroach

American Cockroach

Among pest cockroaches, American cockroaches stands out as one of the largest in size. They can grow up to 40mm in length. American cockroaches primarily rely on flight for short distances, especially in the warmer weather. They are a shiny reddish-brown colour with a pale band around the head.

These pests not only gravitate towards food sources as adults but also deposit their egg sacs in cracks and crevices near these areas.  Adults can live up to one year and an adult female will produce an average of 150 young in her lifetime. American cockroaches are commonly found in a range of commercial and residential properties around Newcastle. In fact, they are the most prevalent cockroach worldwide.

Australian Cockroach

Australian Cockroach

The Australian cockroach is brown with a yellow line around its head and is often confused with the American cockroach. However, the Australian cockroach is smaller with a body length between 23-35mm long. These pests are have fully developed wings and will fly short distances to move around, much like the American cockroach.

Australian cockroaches tend to live outside around the perimeter of dwellings, but will readily come in side looking for food and shelter. They will often look for dark, damp areas of the home, such as cracks and crevises, sub-floors, garbage bins, and under sinks and in drains, where they will deposit their egg sacks. Like the other cockroach species, the Australian cockroach breeds quickly. Females typically have around 25 eggs at a time and she will breed 20 – 30 times in her lifetime. That is around 750 babies per female!

Oriental Cockroach

Oriental Cockroach

The Oriental cockroach is also known as the 'water bug' due to their preference for wet environments. They have glossy, dark brown (almost black) bodies and around 20-25mm in length. Females tend to grow up to 5 mm larger than males but have no wings, while the males are smaller and have wings that cover almost their entire abdomen; however, they are unable to fly due to their under-developed wings.

Oriental cockroaches are more of an outdoor species, preferring to feed on decaying organic matter in mulch and leaf litter. They will however enter the home through cracks and crevises, pipes and drainages, looking for food and water sources. If you have leaky pipes or accessible garbage, that is where you will find them. They will lay their eggs in these dark, moist place, birthing up to 130 young in their lifetime (around 6 months).

small cockroaches

Brown Banded Cockroach

Brown Banded Cockroach

Brown-banded cockroaches are a small species of invasive cockroaches. These serial pests get their name from the two light brown bands they have across their dark brownish bodies. The adult male brown banded cockroach can fly, but the female has shortened wings and cannot fly. They both frow up to 15mm in length.

Brown-banded cockroaches take shelter throughout households and are often found lurking in kitchen cabinets and bathrooms, and even behind picture frames and in electrical equipment. This species lives for 206 days on average and can reproduce at alarming rates - around 600 young per year. Due to their rapid breeding habits treatment can difficult - these pests are ones for a professional!

German Cockroach

German Cockroach

German cockroaches are the most prevalent cockroach species globally. They are a tan, light brown colour, easily identified by the two dark vertical lines running along the edge of their body. They grow up to 15mm in length. Although they have wings, they tend to prefer to walk, hence you’ll usually spot them running around the surfaces of your home.

German cockroaches are sometimes confused with brown banded cockroaches which are of similar size can colour, but lack the dark vertical stripes. As they breed super quickly, they are challenging to get rid of without expert assistance.

German and Brown Banded cockroaches are more difficult to treat than the larger species of cockroaches. This is due to their rapid breeding habits.  These pests are typically eliminated in 2 - 3 weeks (with a minimum of two treatments). However, a more severe infestation might take up to eight weeks. It is critical to break the breeding cycle. DIY methods rarely solve an infestation and require an expert to analyse the problem and create a treatment plan.

What Diseases Do cockroaches Carry?

In addition to eating and contaminating food products, cockroaches carry various bacteria and diseases that can be a risk to your health. Even the droppings of a cockroach can carry microbes that may live for a few years in the droppings and pose a threat to you and your family. Some of the diseases transmitted by cockroaches are:

Asthma

Salmonella

Coli infections

Campylobacteriosis

Typhoid

Cholera
